- Why did you grow a beard?
Well, it all started with me getting a moustache when I was but about 14 years old. People made fun of it, and so I started to shave it off. A little over 2 years ago I got a role in a play which I figured a beard would suit, so I stopped shaving while working on the play, and afterwards I realized how well it suited me, so I decided to keep it. Since then I have received many a compliment on it.
- What length or style are you going for? Is there a length you feel is too long?
Most of the time I stick with the "sea captain" style, i.e. a goatee and moustache, and shave it relatively short. I have experimented with sideburns and a full beard, specifically to avoid the hassle of having to shave my neck, but I seem to be unable to grow such a thing properly, so I stick with the "sea captain". It is the style I think looks best. I don't think a long beard would suit me, so when it comes to length I keep it pretty trimmed.
- Did you ever want to grow a beard before you were old enough?
Nope. When I was a kid, I would have laughed at the idea of a beard, and as the story of my beard shows, the beard preceded my interest in it. I like to think the beard knew I was meant to have a beard before I knew myself.
- If so, were there any influences to that decision?
N/A
- What’s your favorite beard quote?
I have two. I hope that's not cheating.
"There are two kinds of people in this world that go around beardless - boys and women - and I am neither one."
- Greek saying
"He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man."
- William Shakespeare
- Does your beard have a nickname. If so, what is it, and how did you get it?
No, my relationship with my beard is strictly professional. We do not have nicknames for each other.
- What first motivated you to grow a beard?
That I realized how darn good I look with one. [/shameless narcissism]
- Describe your beard in one word.
Suave.
- Do you recommend other men to grow beards?
Despite the name of the group, I am very much a supporter of individuality and the idea that everyone should find the style that is right for them - even if that style is beardless. I believe the beard is in nature broadminded and nondiscriminating, even of nonbeards.
- Do you feel there are any downfalls to growing a beard? If so, what are they?
When the beard is in a transitory phase and thus not the way one wants it to be ... it can look pretty darn silly. Plus it may itch.
- Do you ever shave or plan on shaving your beard in the future? If so, why?
Since I like costumes and acting, it is sometimes required of me to shave my beard to fully assume a role, though it is something I am very much against since the beardless look makes me look like a kid. Alas, sometimes one must make sacrifices for the art. However, should the future love of my life wish me to shave, I shall do so without so much as blinking. I gladly make sacrifices for love.
- What grooming techniques do you perform on your facial hair?
Only trimming.
- If you have a spouse/partner: How do they feel about your choice of facial hair?
Sadly, I have none such yet. I do however hope that my future partner will be as much a fan, nay, a bigger fan of my beard than I am.
- How long have you been growing beards?
I started growing a beard at about age 14, but at that time I did not appreciate it and so shaved it off. My current beard I have been growing for a little over 2 years now and have only had to completely shave off a few times.
- What do you like most about your beard?
That it suits my face so well. And that it allows me to stroke it when thinking.
- How do you deal with comments from friends/family/coworkers, etc.?
If they are positive, I savour them. If they are negative, I ignore them.
- Have you ever experienced any rejection because of your beard?
Not yet, no, and I hope I never shall.
- Any beard achievements you're especially proud of?
Not as such, no.
- Do you have any words of wisdom for future beard growers?
Not really, no. I'll advise them what I advise everyone to do: To follow their hearts.
- Do you idolize someone's beard? (Famous or not.) If so, who and why?
I idolize Robert Downey, Jr., both beardwise and in general. To me, he represents suaveness, coolness and rugged good looks. And so does his beard.
